Stakeholder workshops produce colorful matrices. Assurance teams need something quieter: a decision log that explains why a topic entered the assurance boundary, who approved it, and which data owners are accountable.

Two axes are not enough

Impact and financial significance remain useful, but reviewers also ask about data maturity. A high-impact topic with immature systems may be disclosed without assurance. Document that choice explicitly so it does not look like avoidance later.

Version the map

Materiality drifts when acquisitions close or product mixes shift. Keep dated versions in the same repository as your financial auditing app engagement file. Our cohorts practice a lightweight change-control note that takes fifteen minutes and prevents hours of reconstruction.

Invite finance early

When controllers join the first mapping session, ESG-related financial assurance stops feeling like an afterthought. They spot denominator issues before the KPI is published โ€” the cheapest moment to fix them.
